Trading Standards & Environmental Health

There is no getting away from it – if you're going to produce and sell food direct to the public there's a bunch of rules and regulations you're going to have to follow. As part of our program to ensure the best quality practices are implemented by local food producers we work closely with Trading Standards and Environmental Health Officers.

Trading Standards is a service run by local County Councils. Its role is to provide consumer protection. It is responsible for the enforcement of laws controlling the accuracy, description, price, quality, quantity, and safety of goods and services including food and agriculture.

They have a wide range of advice sheets on matters such as labeling specific food produce. For Food Business Advice leaflets see their website…

Environmental Health is a service run by the various District Councils around the county. They have a duty to improve public health and safety within their district. This includes all aspects of food safety including food production, Farmers' Markets and direct sales.

Stroud District Council's frequently asked questions on food safety are a good place to start.
